MCO Operating Costs Margin basket

MCO pays on margin, not revenue: county revenue minus a fixed basket of tracked input costs. Enter the quantity used per acre and the expected (projected) versus harvest price for each input. The expected column drives the margin guarantee; the harvest column drives the realized margin, so rising input costs can trigger a payment even when yield and grain price hold.

What is RMA's and what is yours. The expected operating cost, the expected county yield, the projected price and the base rate all come from RMA's 2027 MCO actuarial file and drive the guarantee. What RMA does not publish is how that cost splits across the individual inputs, so the per-input split above is an editable allocation — scaled to hit RMA's total exactly. Change the harvest prices to model input-cost risk; change the split if you know your own mix better. MCO protection is modeled as APH × price × band × protection factor, with the 5% deductible taken against expected county revenue.

Important: This calculator provides per-acre estimates only and is not a guarantee of any payment. Final indemnities are determined by RMA-published county yields, harvest prices, and your operation's actuals once the marketing year closes. Expected county yields are RMA's preliminary figures — confirm with your crop insurance agent for your specific Type/Practice election. Multiply per-acre results by your insured acres to estimate total indemnity. The calculator assumes standard Revenue Protection (RP) with the harvest price upward adjustment; results may differ for RP-HPE or YP policies.

2027 rules: Per RMA bulletin PM-26-036, for the 2027 crop year the SCO area loss trigger rises from 86% to 90%, SCO may be purchased regardless of an ARC election, ECO collapses to a single 95%/90% band, and MCO offers one 95%/90% margin band. All three carry an 80% premium subsidy. ECO and MCO cannot both be elected on the same crop in the same year — they occupy the identical 95%–90% band, one triggered on revenue and one on margin. The calculator will display both at once so they can be compared, and when it does it reports two alternative stacks rather than one total; those figures are never additive. 2027 expected county yields, expected operating costs and base rates are taken from RMA's 2027 MCO actuarial data export dated 8/11/2026. MCO premium shown is indicative only — base rate × protection, less the 80% subsidy — and is not a quote.
